HIV Resources

PrEP and PEP

source: Colorado Health Network

  • PrEP (pre-exposure prophylaxis) is a medication that people not currently living with HIV can take to reduce transmission of HIV

  • PrEP only provides protection against HIV, not any other sexually transmitted infections/viruses.

  • The CDC states that PrEP reduces the risk of getting HIV from sex by about 99% when taken correctly and reduces the risk of getting HIV through injection drug use by at least 74%

  • For people who inject drugs, PrEP is approximately 74% effective in reducing the risk of HIV transmission when taken consistently.

  • Most people prefer to connect with a PrEP Navigator- a professional staff member who can help you get involved in any eligible financial assistance programs, find a doctor that prescribes PrEP, and answer any questions you may have. Colorado Health Network has PrEP Navigators ready to help you.

  • You do not need insurance to be on PrEP. PrEP navigators can help you find financial assistance for people with insurance and without it

  • PEP (post-exposure prophylaxis) is a course of medication that can be used by people who are not currently living with HIV after a possible exposure. PEP must be started within 72 hours of possible exposure to HIV and should only be used in emergency situations
